Christ Sent Me Not to Baptize: Paul's Gospel and the One Baptism

Christ Sent Me Not to Baptize presents a bold and carefully reasoned study of Paul’s gospel and the “one baptism” that stands at the center of New Testament faith. Michael Del Brown argues that Paul’s message to the Gentile world was rooted not in water rituals, but in the spiritual baptism accomplished through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Drawing from Scripture with clarity and depth, this book challenges long-held assumptions, separates tradition from biblical teaching, and invites believers to rediscover the gospel of grace through the faith of Christ alone. For readers seeking a fresh and uncompromising look at Paul’s calling, this work offers insight, conviction, and a renewed understanding of the sufficiency of Christ.

My readerverified score is 15%. It is clear to me that this author is not a biblical expert, and I strongly disagree with his assessment of baptism. Honestly, I could write an entire book explaining why his conclusions don’t hold up. I encourage readers to study Scripture for themselves so they aren’t misled.

The book begins with a word study on baptism, and I will say that part is well researched—it's the only reason I gave this book two stars. However, despite his own findings pointing clearly toward immersion, he doesn't conclude that baptism is done by immersion. Instead, he uses his research to support his personal belief that water baptism no longer applies to God’s people today.

In my view, the author’s argument relies heavily on twisting Paul’s writings rather than following what Jesus taught.

One example is how he pulls 1 Corinthians 1:17 out of context—where Paul says he was sent to preach, not to baptize. The author uses this and a few similar verses repeatedly to argue that water baptism has been done away with. He circles back to the same passages so often that it feels like he’s trying to convince not only the reader, but himself.

He also claims that Peter preached a different gospel than Paul, which contradicts one of the very verses he quotes: “one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” If there is only one faith, then there is only one gospel.

Another issue is how he separates water baptism and baptism by the Holy Spirit as if they are unrelated. I believe they are two parts of the same whole. Water baptism is our step of commitment—a public declaration of choosing a new life in Christ. Baptism by the Holy Spirit is Jesus working within us, refining us and preparing us to share the gospel. They work together, not in opposition.

Personally, I would rather err on the side of obedience. If Jesus Himself was baptized, then I should take that step too. Isn’t that what following Christ means?

John 3:5

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars: A Fully Immersive Study

My ReaderVerified score is 95%. Starting with the evocative title, Christ Sent Me Not to Baptize, this book grabs your attention. Author Michael Del Brown dives into the apostle Paul's full meaning and role of the word 'baptizo.' This book examines and considers all the possible intentions behind the various references to the word 'Baptism' in both Christian and Jewish faiths.

This book is both scholarly in its thorough analysis of Paul's scripture, yet inviting to anyone who desires to understand his gospel and his insights into the one baptism. I highly recommend this book to students of scripture and those who want to look deeper into their faith.

Hi Michael,

I reviewed your eBook a while ago, but it took a while for Amazon to post it. I purchased your eBook, but they stated that I purchased your audiobook. Not sure why Amazon made so many mistakes with my review of your book, but I will try to get it straightened out.
Happy New Year!
