About the book
The Export Adventurer is Gerald Bratley’s international trade memoir, an account of nearly sixty years in international trade, tracing a working life that began in Yorkshire industry and developed across more than sixty countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, East Asia, Australasia and the Caribbean..
Part memoir and part social history, the book reveals what exporting actually involved before email, mobile phones and digital communication transformed the business world. From export offices and factory floors to embassies, boardrooms and overseas manufacturing plants, it chronicles a working life spent negotiating contracts, transferring technology, establishing licensed manufacturing operations and helping British companies navigate complex international markets.
The story unfolds through real events and first-hand experiences: rebuilding projects in the aftermath of conflict, cultural misunderstandings, commercial successes and failures, life inside foreign ministries and factories, and the personal sacrifices demanded by a career spent largely on the road.
Nothing is fictionalised and very little is embellished. The Export Adventurer is the story of British exporting as it was once practised—built on relationships, resilience, curiosity and a willingness to step into unfamiliar parts of the world.
